Summer Camp Magic

Last summer I had the opportunity to create a magical experience for my niece by designing her very own Summer camp at home. I interviewed her beforehand to learn what she would most look forward to at a real camp, then kept the entire plan a surprise until the big day. I’m excited to share these ideas because they were incredibly fun to put together and very budget-friendly. This concept could also be easily adapted for a child’s birthday celebration.

To keep things exciting, each day was broken up into a different theme. Day one was Field Day, day two was Spa Day, and day three was Field Trip Day.

Field Day

We kicked things off with Field Day, which was all about classic outdoor games and lots of movement. I set up simple activities that felt just like a real camp field day — fun, a little competitive, and full of laughs. It was the perfect way to burn off energy and get excited for the rest of the week.

Yes, we did dart-painting like in the Disney movie Princess Diaries!

Spa Day

Day two slowed things down with a relaxing Spa Day. This was all about pampering and self-care, kid-style. Think face masks, nail painting, cozy pajamas, fuzzy slippers, and Disney movies. It was such a fun contrast to the high-energy first day and a great way to help her feel extra special.

Below, you’ll see how we recreated the iconic tent from Spice World (the Spice Girls movie — if you know, you know 😉). This was such a fun project to work on together, and we were honestly a little sad when it was time to take it down. We filled the bottom of the pool with tons of pillows and blankets to make it extra cozy for movie night.

Field Trip Day

We wrapped things up with Field Trip Day, which made the whole experience feel even more official. She always had something exciting to look forward to and could hardly contain her anticipation of not knowing what the day would bring until that morning. We headed to the Children’s Science Museum, where we explored space, weather, and the aquarium. Afterward, we set up a picnic at a nearby park to end the day.

Food

The food totally matched the theme of each day. Field Day came with all the fun of carnival snacks — think corn-on-the-cob, corn dogs, pretzels, and a little sugar rush! Spa Day got a sweet twist with Shirley Temples and a rainbow candy salad that might have stolen the show. And of course, Field Trip Day ended with our cozy picnic in the park, the perfect way to refuel after a day of adventures.

Crafts

Every day, the craft station was stocked with a new project to keep our little camper busy and creative. It was the perfect way to give her a hands-on activity between games, pampering, and adventures — and she loved getting to make something special to take home.

I teamed up with ChatGPT and Staples to create every little detail — from the station signs and menus to the activity booklets and even coloring books — to make the whole camp feel as authentic as possible. It was so fun seeing it all come together, and those little touches really made the experience extra special.

All in all, creating this at-home summer camp for my niece was an absolute blast — from Field Day chaos to Spa Day treats, and of course our cozy Spice World movie tent. We laughed, we crafted, we ate way too much candy, and we made memories that will stick with us forever. If you’re looking to sprinkle a little magic into an ordinary week or need a one-of-a-kind birthday idea, trust me: an at-home summer camp is your ticket. Bonus points if you get to sneak in a candy salad or two!
